In this candid conversation with Private Equity Insights at CEE\u2019s Largest PE Conference, he shares his views on the regional landscape, Morphosis Capital\u2019s growth story, and how education and values-led investing play a defining role in his firm\u2019s strategy.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Turning turbulence into traction<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On a bright afternoon in Warsaw, tucked into the quieter corner of a high-ceilinged hotel lobby, Andrei Gemeneanu sits comfortably, his voice calm but purposeful. It\u2019s the kind of setting that belies the significance of the conversation: a chance to dissect Romania\u2019s emerging role in the private equity space with someone shaping its very trajectory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Andrei is a seasoned investor with a global outlook, but the regional nuances of Central and Eastern Europe aren\u2019t lost on him. \u201cThe old paradigm was that Western Europe is stable and Central and Eastern Europe is volatile,\u201d he says. \u201cI think now we have volatility everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That volatility, he argues, carries growth. \u201cOur job as private equity fund managers is to find opportunities irrespective of what\u2019s going on in the macroeconomic cycle. Sometimes we can turn volatility itself into an opportunity.\u201d He credits an old boss for the wisdom: \u201cNever waste a good crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He doesn\u2019t shy away from the complications of operating in a region often described in terms of instability. \u201cOf course, the fundraising environment has been difficult. Of course, the war at the border doesn\u2019t help,\u201d he says. \u201cBut our job is to be aware of these things, not let them stop what we\u2019re doing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When asked whether Morphosis ever clashes with political interference, Andrei is direct. \u201cWe try to not invest in sectors that are highly regulated or have significant revenue from state-owned organisations,\u201d he explains. \u201cWe steer clear of regulatory risks.\u201d That principle guides how Morphosis builds its portfolio: measured ambition, pragmatic optimism, and a consistent eye for resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That strategic distance from politics hasn\u2019t dampened optimism. \u201cRomania has reconfirmed its pro-European affiliation,\u201d he says. \u201cThere are macroeconomic challenges, like a budget deficit, but the general sentiment is positive.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Betting on homegrown capital<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This optimism is also part of what fuels Andrei\u2019s institutional work. Recently appointed chairman of the Romanian Private Equity Association (ROPEA), he\u2019s become a vocal advocate for the long-term development of the country\u2019s capital markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe EIF, EBRD and IFC have been bedrocks for our industry,\u201d he says. But beyond international institutions, Andrei is pushing to unlock domestic capital. \u201cWe\u2019re actively working to change the fact that Romanian pension funds don\u2019t yet invest in private equity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Morphosis is already leading by example. \u201cWe\u2019ve attracted over \u20ac30 million of local entrepreneurial capital for our second fund,\u201d he says. \u201cThese are entrepreneurs who\u2019ve built businesses over the last two to three decades. They bring capital, networks, and insight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I mention that private equity in Romania still seems largely under the radar. He agrees, grinning slightly. \u201cRomania\u2019s private equity AUM as a percentage of GDP is still at 0.0-something,\u201d he says. \u201cBut that\u2019s the opportunity \u2013 we have a market to create.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Scaling vision, not just valuation<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So what drives him personally? \u201cI\u2019m excited about private equity because private equity fosters entrepreneurship and entrepreneurship fosters progress and the development of a society. So, I think we\u2019re in a really exciting industry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Morphosis recently closed its second fund at over \u20ac120 million \u2013 more than double the size of its first. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of blood, sweat and tears,\u201d he says. \u201cBut we had three exits from Fund I. Each generated an IRR above 30%.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Andrei describes himself as \u201can operator in my DNA.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA smooth operator,\u201d I say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cExactly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His career path \u2013 from Unilever to entrepreneurship to private equity \u2013 reflects a long-held instinct for building businesses from the inside. \u201cI felt right at home in private equity because, as I like to say to my team, it\u2019s an unforgiving world in its expectation that you will drive superior returns.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Morphosis team reflects this ethos. \u201cWe\u2019re gender balanced at the partner level,\u201d he says. \u201cThree of us were high school classmates. We\u2019ve known each other a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This blend of shared history and professional diversity shapes the firm\u2019s decision-making. \u201cWe are very different in terms of personality and in terms of professional background, and I think we complement each other well,\u201d he says. \u201cWe trust each other.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Founders first, always<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Across retail, healthcare, and now education, Morphosis stays sector-agnostic. But people come first. \u201cWe never buy companies. We invest in partnerships because we are essentially a growth capital investor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their approach is deliberate. \u201cWe\u2019re very keen on assessing human fit,\u201d he says. \u201cWe have a proprietary process in place that we call \u2018human due diligence,\u2019 which helps us understand whether the chemistry and the dynamics of the relationship will be positive in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That goes beyond skillsets and spreadsheets. \u201cWe assess values, vision, and chemistry,\u201d he adds. \u201cYou test relationships in difficult moments.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Founders are not just part of the story. They are the story. Andrei returns to this idea often: \u201cWe look for alignment and ambition. Everything else flows from there.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Educating for impact<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Few sectors illustrate Morphosis\u2019s alignment philosophy better than education. Their Romanian Education Alliance began with two flagship acquisitions: Mark Twain International School and Little London Academy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe went into education with our head and heart,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd the two schools combined have enabled us to go above 1,000 children, which was the first milestone we were keen to reach. We are launching an organic campus in Cosmopolis. Now in September, we are preparing a bigger campus that we call the Flagship Campus that will be launched probably two years down the road.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The long-term ambition is clear: build a national network of modern, accessible, competitive private schools across Romania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Could that model support the public system too? \u201cWe haven\u2019t made a strategic move in that direction,\u201d he says. \u201cWe are always open and actually welcome kids from public schools in our sports competitions, debate competitions or Model United Nations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Andrei reflects on his own schooling. \u201cMaths, physics \u2013 the old-school approach,\u201d he says. \u201cYou have, in my view, exceptional schools on the public side in Romania, but unfortunately you probably have some schools that are not really fully unleashing the potential of those children.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>From Bucharest to beyond<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The REA is just one part of Morphosis\u2019s broader regional ambition. Their recent investment in Bulgarian satellite company Endurosat reflects this next chapter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA brilliant entrepreneur with a visionary mission,\u201d Andrei says. \u201cWe want our portfolio companies to be regional and international champions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That thinking also applies internally. \u201cWe have to apply the same logic to ourselves,\u201d he says. \u201cNot just national champions. Regional ones.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As our conversation winds down, Andrei gestures toward his younger colleagues. \u201cWe\u2019re here at the Private Equity Insights Conference with Dr\u0103g\u0103lina and David,\u201d he says. \u201cTwo young professionals with a lot of potential. I love young people \u2013 they give me energy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Towards the end of our discussion, he doesn\u2019t romanticise the journey, but he is resolute. \u201cBeing one of the first movers in private equity in our geography means being comfortable with uncharted territories,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Andrei Gemeneanu is not just leading a private equity firm. He\u2019s laying the foundation for a stronger, more entrepreneurial Romania.
